2020–21
Limbo
"Limbo explores the fine print of what it means to grow in the face of chaos, to make progress even when we're stuck. It is an ode to the regularities we've been forced to leave behind, a pledge to pick ourselves back up, and a vow to accept the messiness our lives will continue to present us with."
—Spectator staff, 2021
2019–20
Eras
"In Eras we aim to capture how our students create these categories, how we measure periods of time and change in the world. We have organized the magazine in chronological order, as if all of our creation took place over the course of a single day. This day-in-the-life captures the diversity of experiences of our high schoolers: every passing day holds so much change for each of us that it is an era in itself."
—Spectator staff, 2020
2018–19
Dualities
"Dualities explores the natural, synthetic, interpersonal and conceptual realms. No matter what aspect of reality or the abstract we focus on, there are always opposite forces driving things closer together or further apart. Especially in the present political and social environment of polarized viewpoints and a dividing rhetoric, it is important to remember that there are always two sides to a story."
—Spectator staff, 2019
2017–18
Infinities
"One action can set off many things, another infinity — the impact of one moment, felt forever. Infinities is our ode to a world made of moments bigger than ourselves, but which we struggle to fit into. Despite being single parts of a larger story, the individual moments in our lives may feel very strong indeed — they are their own infinities, spiraling outwards."
-Spectator staff, 2018
2016–17
Terra
"Terra is divided into seven sections, plus an interview. Each section explores a different region of the earth — with a unique style of writing, art, and design. It is our effort to incorporate the amazing variety of cultures found at Walter Johnson; we strive to showcase the world through ourselves, using our heritage and experience to create visual and written snapshots of our world."
—Spectator staff, 2017
2015–16
Ontogeny
"Ontogeny's formal definition is the development of an organism from its earliest stage through maturity, to its end stage. So, from start to finish Ontogeny traces the developments of humans and of the process by which the creation of meaning turns space into place. It is the expression of life today, and fresh minds on the cusp of making the world of tomorrow."

2014–15
Rhythms & Patterns
"As a species we have evolved not just biologically, but culturally. We have deciphered rhythms and patterns in nature and created our own: music, poetry, science, and art. We learn critical rites of passage, especially that of adolescence to adulthood. In this issue, we celebrate rhythms and patterns, and the tremendous influence they have on us."
—Spectator staff, 2015
2013–14
Escape
"Escape is an aspiration, a hope, a dream. Everyone has ways to get away from the world. For the artists and writes featured in Escape, escape is also artistic expression. This magazine is a place where artists and writers have come together to find a place of solace. We hope to take readers out of day-to-day life and into a world where dreams become realities."

Reflections
"To reflect on our first memories is to awaken our memory and feel it live again. Reflections is a collective artistic reflection and expression of a group of young adults living in a particular place and time. In its attempt to reflectively understand, we hope it is, above all, an expression of Love."
-Spectator Magazine, 2013
2010–11
Secrets
"Secrets are an elemental part of ourselves, especially in high school where we are hyper-conscious of others. Sometimes, the only way we can freely express ourselves is through art and writing. In keeping with the title, the photography, artwork, fiction, and poetry in Secrets seeks to reveal secrets and provide a glimpse into what is hidden from view. As spectators, we are granted a look into the inner thoughts and secrets of the artists and their creations."
—Spectator staff, 2011
2009–10
Entropy
"Entropy may not reach epic proportions for decades, but artists of all ages, always the antennae of the race, are beginning to self-record this entropic pattern, much like a series of broken film strips. Entropy is divided into four movements: Americana, Overripe, Entropy, and New Paradigms which mirrors the cycles of America's vision. It is Spectator's mission to not only produce the best, but to publish the most expressive work in whatever artistic form we find it."
—Spectator staff, 2010
2008–09
Transitions
"In Transitions, we explore the theme of human experience. Outside each structure and the name we assign to it, lurks the chaos of existence with the great nothing in between. In 2008, outlandish prosperity collapsed into recession, we changed presidents and agendas, and we realize, more than ever, how natural abundance flirts with extinction. Creatives, the antennae of humans, bear witness to it all. Transitions aims to publish student expression in whatever artistic form we find it."
—Spectator staff, 2009
2007–08
Suburbia
"In Suburbia, we explore the world of that post-World War II phenomenon where the American Dream rebounded from turbulence and conflict to pursue its right to life, liberty, and happiness. Whether we are walking down a dirt road in rural Pennsylvania, riding the London Eye, watching a bull fight in Mexico or vacationing Cape Cod in July, our experiences and imaginings are informed by the suburban terroir they rise from."
—Spectator staff, 2008
2006–07
Found
"Who we are and who we pretend to be are often decidedly at odds. In Found, we have explored contemporary and unconventional forms of self expression such as graffiti, cartoons, digital art, haiku, fiction fragments, and journal entries. We hope to convey a sense of comfort through our artistic expression, and cultivate an affinity for the arts and creative expressions."
—Spectator Staff, 2007
2005–06
Calamity
"Calamity is an assemblage of found art, compiled into a collection of Walter Johnson's creative body. It reminisces on childhood, reflects on adolescence, and reckons on uncertain futures; hence, the title Calamity, for the myriad trials and rewards of growing up through Walter Johnson's artists' and writers' eyes. We hope you experience the same sense of joy while reading that we did creating it."
—Spectator Staff, 2006
